Company Profile
Bloom PBS endeavours to provide professional and person-centred services which aim to improve the wellbeing of people living with disability. We are a team of Behaviour Support Practitioners with extensive experience providing positive behaviour support for people funded under NDIS. Bloom PBS practitioners provide a safe and non-judgemental space for people to discuss their concerns with the knowledge they will be responded to with care and compassion. We ensure our practitioners have manageable caseloads, so they have the capacity to provide our clients with a timely, customised and thorough service.
What is Positive Behaviour Support?
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidence-based therapy with a primary goal of increasing a person’s quality of life, which often has a flow on effect of decreasing the frequency and severity of behaviours of concern.
How does Positive Behaviour Support work?
Positive Behaviour Support recognises that behaviours of concern serve a function and communicate important information to us. Behaviour Support Practitioners work closely with the person and the system surrounding them to try and discover the function of a behaviour and any unmet needs that the person may be attempting to fulfill. Behaviours of concern don’t occur in isolation. They are influenced by, and responsive to a person’s environment and system. At Bloom PBS, we recognise that the person doesn’t need to be “fixed”, but their environment and system modified to improve their quality of life.
What is “The System”?
The system refers to the support system surrounding the person. A support system can consist of many people, each playing a different role in the person’s life. Rather than blaming the person for the problem we recognise that the problem is greater than the person. We seek to establish a shared understanding of the systemic, environmental, medical, sensory and mental health factors which may be triggering and maintaining behaviours of concern. We welcome and encourage all people in the person’s support system to be involved in the positive behaviour support process. At Bloom, we are all about growing together. For us, this means knowledge gained through information sharing, and a team approach to implement interventions aimed at improving a person’s quality of life.
Who is eligible for Positive Behaviour Support?
Any person between 7 to 65 years of age, who has Improved Relationships funding in their NDIS plan, is eligible for services with Bloom PBS.
How long does it take?
Positive Behaviour Support is not a quick fix solution. The process generally takes place over a period of 6 to 12 months. This is because it can take a long time to work out why behaviours are occurring, as well as trial the effectiveness of intervention strategies.
What if restrictive practices are identified?
Restrictive practice means any practice or intervention that has the effect of restricting the rights or freedom of movement of a person with disability. It is a requirement of Behaviour Support Practitioners to report all restrictive practices to the NDIS and demonstrate a clear plan for reducing their use. Sometimes it is not possible to stop the use of a restrictive practice. In this case, it needs to be reviewed by a Quality Assurance Panel, who decide whether it is appropriate to be authorised. Restrictive practices are often used with the best intentions by a person’s support system to manage behaviour. At Bloom PBS, we understand that supporting people with behaviours of concern can be very challenging. We never approach the use of restrictive practices with judgement.
Our Emblem
The Bloom PBS emblem is the Swan River Daisy. This uniquely West Australian flower blooms in a wide variety of environments given the right support. The colour is rare amongst daisies and symbolises trust. This is the foundation upon which we build our relationship with clients and their systems.
